Training
The aim of Flamenco del Sur is to foster and nourish a passion for flamenco dance. The focus of classes is to develop students’ skill and expressiveness so they can perform a range of traditional flamenco dances with confidence and flair.
Classes build sound technique, step by step. There is a strong focus on correct posture, accurate footwork, skill with turning steps, and the eloquent use of arms and hands.
Developing an understanding of flamenco rhythms is also an important part of students’ training, along with learning clapping techniques and how to play the castanets.
Authentic dances are taught at levels appropriate to students’ skill and experience. These include dances performed with a fan, and those with a shawl.
Students are given the opportunity—and encouraged—to perform in public, as this provides focus and builds confidence. It is exciting to bring the passion and diversity of flamenco dance to our community.
